Vibal MAPEH Author Bags First Prize in China's Sports and P.E. Congress
byKat Bautista • April 27, 2010

Mr. Lordinio Vergara (right) with Dr. Lee Jong Young, President of Pan-Asian Society of Sports and PE at the Jiangxi Normal University, China
The 21st Pan-Asian Congress of Sports and Physical Education held in Nanchang City, China from April 22-25 was an opportunity of a lifetime for Mr. Lordinio Vergara, one of the authors of Vibal's MAPEH for a Better You Series (Music, Art, PE and Health). He bested 400 finalists for his paper presentation “The Leisure Activities that College Students Spend Time on Today.”

Mr. Vergara’s entry was the study he conducted for his Master's Degree at the Philippine Normal University entitled “An Analysis of Leisure Experiences (Libangang Iral) of College Students: Basis for a Proposed Activity Plan in Physical Education.” The study explored the different activities such as texting, listening to music, and the like.

The finalists were divided in two groups: one for those who had to present their paper orally and those who had to exhibit their study in poster displays. Mr. Vergara’s paper was chosen for oral presentation, and he was given six minutes to present, aided by an interpreter.

Presenters who were ahead of Mr. Vergara delivered their papers in a less interactive manner, which gave him an idea to spice up his presentation by engaging the audience. When his turn came, he started his presentation with a short question and answer portion, rewarding those who answered correctly with pins from the Philippines. The lively interaction then boosted his confidence, delivering his presentation in a more convincing manner despite the language barrier.

“If you are eager to show your professionalism to the world, nothing can stop you from emerging a winner,” Mr. Vergara concludes of his experience.

Mr. Vergara is currently working on the second edition of Vibal's Exploring with MAPEH textbook series for high school.
